Pride and Prejudice: iPhone Written App Review
Reviewed by Valerie Lauer
It is a truth universally known that a gaming genre such as hidden object is in wont of a good story. So the marriage of the most well-known novel by a one Jane Austen to a hidden object search was born. The result is the new Hidden Anthologies title, Pride and Prejudice, which combines the beloved story and characters with an engaging game where searching is just the beginning. Get drawn into scenes from the favorite in a whole new way with this superb title from Europress.
Features:
By way of a confession, I must tell you, faithful readers, that hidden object games are not my favorite genre. Usually I find them lacking a plot, so, thankfully, in Pride and Prejudice the story takes center stage. Instead of being subjected to a word-for-word rip off, the game paraphrases scenes quite nicely, and sticks to the plot. That's quite a smart move, in my opinion. Then again, I'm a bit prejudiced. Pride and Prejudice has been a favorite of mine for quite a long time.
So, with a combination of interesting storytelling and a liberal assortment of mini games, the Hidden Anthologies: Pride and Prejudice app managed to make a believer out of me. This is the first hidden object app I've ever really enjoyed playing.
The mini games are varied. After tackling the app's the first few chapters, I managed to unlock a piano mini game that's reminiscent of tap tap music apps, only to classical songs. I also found a puzzle style mini game rather fun, and it looks like there's more where that came from.
Layout & Design:
Hidden Anthologies: Pride and Prejudice
Set to a simple piano soundtrack, the Pride and Prejudice hidden object app is full of books and busy Victorian-era rooms. Detail and solid graphics are a must have in a genre like this, and I'm happy to say the app delivers quite well. I'm particularly happy with the game's zoom and scan features. They make it much easier to scan rooms for objects and work like a charm.
Unfortunately, I did experience a few functionality issues with the app. It force closed a time or two when I was trying to navigate between rooms. Otherwise, it acted quite charmingly and ran without error. I did find myself wishing for pause option on some of the pages that didn't have it, or an easier way to navigate back to the main menu while saving my progress.
Overall Value:
As the hidden object genre goes, Hidden Anthologies: Pride and Prejudice is among the best, in my admittedly biased opinion. It was a lucky idea to combine the wildly popular novel with a genre that really benefits from a solid backing story. I only wish I'd come up with and could take the credit for such a solid application. Hidden Anthologies: Pride and Prejudice is scheduled to release on May 13. I highly recommend it.
