Los Angeles, California – Popular desktop application, Fluency Timer, comes to the iOS this week. The app allows teachers, parents, and students themselves to record fluency readings with the push of a button. An adjustable timer automatically stops the recording at the end of a preset time. Recordings can be played back, e-mailed, or transferred to the desktop. Both free and pro versions are available.
Created by internationally know teacher and literacy coach, Mathew Needleman, the simple app provides classrooms with an easy option for improving student achievement. "I created this because I needed it in my classroom. There are lots of timers and lots of recorders but I need both combined in one. And I need it to be simple enough that I can give it to my first graders to use when I'm working with a small group," says Needleman.
Research has shown that having students listen to themselves reading increases reading scores because students are able to hear and correct their own mistakes. Teachers can collect audio recordings as evidence of student achievement and communicate results by sharing recordings with parents and colleagues.
A free (ad supported) version is available as well as a pro version which eliminates ads and provides the ability to transfer multiple recordings to a desktop computer. Both versions allow recordings to be individually e-mailed.
