When Apple released iOS 6 beta iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4 received minimal features of the new iOS. It was enough of a surprise that iPhone 3GS received the upgrade in the first place. However what was not expected is that iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4 receive more features than promised! Both devices got features that make them almost as good as the iPhone 4 in terms of features. Below is a table I made to help you visualize the comparisons.

So now the only difference between the devices is the offline reading list supported by only iPhone 4. Not a huge feature and it could be coming to iPhone 3GS soon, who knows? This is further confirmed by Apple removing the footnotes describing the features that were not available on both older devices. This includes:

"Shared Photo Streams requires iOS 6 on iPhone 4 or later or iPad 2 or later, or a Mac computer with OS X Mountain Lion. An up-to-date browser is required for accessing shared photo streams on the web.

VIP list and VIP and Flagged smart mailboxes will be available on iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later."

This completely juxtaposes with what happened to iPhone 3G in iOS 4 beta. The iPhone first supported multitasking and a home screen wallpaper. Then since it was too slow both features were removed. However the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4 got more features because they were too fast.

Why do you think Apple gave the devices these features?
