Speedy Dial!: iPhone App Written and Video Review
Reviewed by Luke Patrick
Do you wish you could call your friends, family and coworkers much more efficiently on the iPhone? Wish there was an app that would enable you to do this? If so, then step up to the queue, my friend! Speedy Dial! by developer BFSApps fits the bill and more. It makes it exceptionally easy to load what's already on your phone's contact list, and then display it in such a way that allows you to instantly call up to 48 contacts. If that sounds like something you might be interested in, then keep on scrolling beyond the break for our full review!
Concept and Functionality
So what is Speedy Dial? Essentially, the app is a modernized edition of speed dial for your iPhone. This is a cool concept, as the phone itself does not come with any form of quick calling, while platforms like the HTC Sense UI do. Here's how Speedy Dial works: The app trolls through your contacts list, looking for names and numbers. It then displays these across three unique pages with color coded buttons to make your life easier. All in all, it's a quick setup, too. The app is automatically tied to your contacts list, though you're also welcome to peel back the hood and plug in those numbers yourself. You can also edit the buttons and their colors if you'd like, ensuring that you get the perfect fit for your auto-dialing needs. Overall, the app is a smooth criminal and we have no real functionality complaints with the app. It dials out as expected, and typically we did have a significant ease-of-use increase while using Speedy Dial.
Design and Interface
Speedy Dial for iPhone
Sadly, though, Speedy Dial just isn't the prettiest application we've ever seen on the iPhone. Sure, it works quite well and it's easy enough to see, but it just doesn't have that Web 2.0 pizazz that we really enjoy in modern apps. We think the app could do with a custom background and some better buttons, as well as cross-reference control. We'd like to be able to change a contact in-app and have it be reflected in our actual Contacts application. This sort of backwards compatibility would be great, and would add a whole lot of value to Speedy Dial.
Overall Value
On the subject, Speedy Dial is only a dollar for a limited time only. If you ask us, that's not a lot to ask for the app, though the value it offers is somewhat subjective. It's so efficient to dial a contact these days that the need for speed dial is questionable. Aside from that, though, the app works fine, and will perhaps improve your dialing speed. Future updates could easily churn out some cooler graphics, and as soon as total integration with the contacts list has been added, you can expect a whole lot more value out of Speedy Dial.
Speedy Dial! requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
